What is CBN? Mechanisms, effects and uses
CBN: the sleep cannabinoid, naturally formed by THC oxidation.

CBN (cannabinol) is a cannabinoid derived from the oxidation of THC over time. It is mildly psychoactive and is being researched for its potential effects on sleep, relaxation, and comfort.
01How CBN works in the body
CBN interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in regulating sleep, mood, appetite, pain, and immune response. It binds to CB1 receptors (central nervous system) and CB2 receptors (immune system and peripheral tissues), generally with a lower affinity than THC.
The perceived effects vary depending on the dose, form (oil, capsule, concentrate), and individual.
02Potential effects of CBN
Sleep and relaxation
CBN is often highlighted for promoting drowsiness and improving sleep duration or quality, especially in combination with other cannabinoids like CBD.
A large-scale trial, but no demonstrated superiority over melatonin
The largest clinical trial conducted to date on CBN, published in 2024 in Pharmaceuticals, tested three doses (25, 50, and 100 mg) on approximately 800 participants, compared to a placebo and 4 mg of melatonin. All CBN doses improved sleep quality compared to placebo, but with no significant difference from melatonin alone.
A critical review of published studies also highlights that marketing claims for CBN ("up to 10 times more powerful than a sleeping pill") far exceed what current data shows, and that studies use much higher doses than those found in most commercially available products (often 5 mg or less).
A 2025 meta-analysis of 6 trials and approximately 1077 participants also found that formulations containing THC and/or CBN significantly improved sleep, while CBD alone did not show a statistically significant effect in the same analysis.

Inflammation and comfort
Preclinical work suggests anti-inflammatory and analgesic potential. Additional clinical validations are needed.
Other avenues of research
- Glaucoma: modulation of intraocular pressure (animal data).
- Neurology: multiple sclerosis (animal models), exploratory research.
- Appetite: reported in some animal models.
These avenues remain exploratory. Human evidence is limited and requires controlled clinical trials.
03How to use CBN
- Sublingual oils: 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime for sleep use.
- Capsules: precise dosage, longer-lasting effect.
- Extracts or hash: depending on tolerance and legality.
Start with a low dose, increase gradually. The combination of CBN + CBD is common to combine relaxation (CBN) and soothing (CBD).
04Safety and legality
In Switzerland, commercialization depends on the THC level (less than 1%) in the final product. CBN can induce drowsiness, dry mouth, or decreased vigilance: avoid risky activities after taking it. Drug interactions are possible.

Is CBN psychoactive?
Mildly. It is much less psychoactive than THC and primarily studied for its potential effects on sleep.

CBD acts on anxiety and pain (sleep quality), CBN is often associated with drowsiness. Combined formulas are common.
